Book A Bird Wise East Kent visit for your school or group
We are Bird Wise East Kent and we are helping the people of East Kent wise up to bird disturbance.
We have successfully been delivering lessons to primary schools across Thanet & Canterbury districts since 2019 and would love to bring our interactive sessions to you.
Each of our sessions covers the plight of the migratory birds that winter on our coast and the threats they face. Each of our sessions link to the curriculum and can be adapted to fit in with your schemes of work to cover a variety of topics for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 (see topics below). We always embed academically appropriate elements of maths and English in each session.
Key stage 1 topics
- Using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions
- Gathering and recording data to help in answering questions
- Identify and name a variety of bird species common to their local environment
- Identify and name common animals that are carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores
- Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals
- observe changes across the four seasons
- Describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies
Key Stage 2 topics
- Explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive
- Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
- Identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats
- Describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food. Identifying that animals need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat
- Notice that animals have offspring which grow into adults
- Describe the basic needs of animals for survival (water, food and air)
- Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways
- Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment
- Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things
- Construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey
