Bird Wise East Kent Research and Strategy Reports

Bird Wise East Kent works to reduce the pressures created by increasing development and growing visitor numbers along our sensitive coastline, which supports many declining wading bird species. The Thanet and Sandwich Bay SPA contains a wide range of habitats and supports approximately one percent of the UK’s wading bird populations, with numbers naturally fluctuating throughout the year.

During winter, thousands of migratory waders travel remarkable distances to spend the season in East Kent, where they rest, feed, and recover before returning to their breeding grounds. In summer, the SPA becomes home to several coastal species that nest on the ground in carefully selected areas across the site.

Research shows that recreational activity can disturb these birds, reducing their ability to feed, rest, or successfully breed. Bird Wise East Kent aims to mitigate these impacts through education, engagement, and responsible coastal recreation.
